Recycled Asphalt
Recycled asphalt is an improvement over a standard crushed limestone, and in the right application, it can be an affordable alternative to hot mix asphalt paving. Recycled asphalt is best for sunny locations, as the summer sun will help the compacted recycled asphalt to bind together, making it less prone to erosion over time than traditional gravel. Recycled asphalt paving can occasionally be used as a base material under asphalt paving, but if the recycled asphalt has hardened due to exposure, it becomes difficult to properly grade it for new pavement.
Traditional recycled asphalt is comprised of mostly old parking lots that have been torn out and reground, but our asphalt primarily consists of unused hot mix asphalt that has been saved in a stock pile to cool for re-use. This means our recycled asphalt has a higher oil content and performs better than "run-of-the-mill" recycled asphalt. Every spring we take our stock pile of extra asphalt left from the previous year's jobs and mill it and screen it for use.
